let me give you some example

indesign is good for magazine , book or newspaper design,

we mostly do photoretouch , then use indesign , import it and do the final layout

we use illustrator to do the icons, graphic arts , then use indesign , import it and the final layout

I'm a printer, and I use Adobe inDesign for performing layouts for printing. Although desktop publishing programs are really meant from newspapers and magazines where you keep the same layout and then just flow the text (articles and text stories) into the same columns of future issues as well as photos and graphics to create each layout.
