Adobe Photoshop, How do you copy one piece so that it doesn't have a white box around it?

When you're working with Photoshop and you want to copy one piece, and then paste onto a different back ground, how do you do it so that the selected piece is outlined and transparent, so that you don't see a white box around it when you paste?

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you are copying from 1 document to another. So, there are 2 possible causes for the white box...

1. The photo you are copying from has a white box around it. If this is the case, then use the rectangular marquee tool to select the non-white area of the photo and paste it into a new document.

2. The document you are pasting into has a white background. If this is the case then you can either double click on the background layer (this will re-name the layer and allow you to delete it), then paste to create a new, transparent layer OR make sure that you choose ''Transparent'' in the ''Background Options'' drop down box in the ''New Document'' dialog box.

Whew! Hope that answers your question. If not, a great beginner's resource for learning Photoshop basics is the Visual Quickstart Guide series of books. (Pretty sure you can get it at Amazon.com)

Just go to options and set as screen or open a new layer it doesn't have the default bg color.
