Using Photoshop cs 8 how do i make a white background transparent?

i have read up on this and tried to follow the steps, but when i try to attach my logo to my website, i get this BIG UGLY white box around my logo. Now, In Photoshop i am able to get the background transparent, the problem comes when i save it as a GIF (which i heard you are able to save transparent backgrounds) when i put it on the website i still get the big white box. Please help. This is frustrating me to bits.

ok easiest way to do this is to use your selection tool and select the edges of your logo. Then go into help, find Export Transparent image and click it. It will take you through the directions for making said background transparent. You will need to choose the option * I have selected the area to be made transparent* and then the format you want for your site. It will make the background transparent. its the quick easy way to do it. =)

Make sure that your selection lines are as close as you can get them to your logo or you will have white lines around it. Also don't forget the insides of letters or other openings that you want to be transparent as well.

First use the magic wand tool thing, and click on background. Then use the eraser tool make sure on the top it is on the eraser with a scissor. Then erase the background and then you should see little black and white boxes.
