I'm using a newly installed Windows XP with Nvidia Geforce 7300 GT, newly installed Adobe Photoshop CS3, and all are in their default settings. Now I opened a photo using the built-in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. It's nice.
However, when opening it in photoshop CS3, the picture is too bright, I tight the gamma is too high, and it's quite grainy.
Unfortunately, there's no more Adobe Gamma and I tinker with the color settings but to no avail. What do you think I can do so the brightness of the image in Photoshop CS3 and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is the same?

Uninstall the previous Photoshop CS3 and reinstall it to other drive.May be it will fix your problem.

I had an issue similar to yours, only my photos were showing up as underexposed %26 oversaturated. I read this thread, and found DarqueMist's post to be most helpful.
