You need to adjust the levels. Brightness/contrast is going to wash the picture out. Go to Image and select Adjustments and levels . Then you need to scoot the two little bars over to the right, starting with the one on the far right, over to the left just a bit while looking at your picture. Only adjust until your picture is as bright as you want it, being careful not to wash it out. Then click ok. That should do the trick.
